Does Wise Work in Argentina? Card Yes, Pesos No (2026)
TL;DR
Wise works in Argentina only as a card: terminals and ATMs. There is no ARS balance and no QR payments; peso transfers reach a bank account only from the UK, Europe or Australia, at the official rate. Card spending settles near the official rate (~1,530 ARS/USD in September 2026) while the crypto dollar is ~1,580. Get paid into Wise, then pay pesos through a wallet like CacaoCash that scans QR and sends to any alias without a DNI.
Yes, Wise works in Argentina, with two big gaps. The Wise debit card pays at card terminals and withdraws at ATMs like any foreign Visa or Mastercard. But Wise has no ARS balance and no QR payments, and its peso transfers only reach an Argentine bank account (CBU) from the UK, Europe or Australia, at the official-equivalent rate; from the US the route is waitlisted. In Brazil Wise pays Pix; in Argentina there is no equivalent. Here is what that means in practice.
What works
- The Wise card at terminals. Supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, hotels, fuel. Contactless and Apple/Google Pay included.
- ATM withdrawals at Banelco and Link machines, minus the local operator fee of about US$8 to US$12 per withdrawal and a low cap per transaction.
- Receiving money in USD, EUR, GBP and 20+ other currencies from abroad, which is what Wise is best at. Getting paid into Wise while living in Argentina is a solid setup.
What does not work
- ARS balance. Wise does not offer an Argentine peso balance. There is nothing to convert into and hold.
- Transfers from the US, or to an alias. Wise sends pesos to an Argentine bank account (CBU) from the UK, Europe and Australia, but not from the US (waitlist), and it needs full bank details rather than an alias. It converts at its mid-market rate, which for the peso is the official rate, about 4% below the crypto dollar. Costs by country in how to send money to Argentina from abroad.
- QR payments. Wise has no QR function anywhere, and Argentina's Mercado Pago and MODO QRs are closed to foreign cards.
- Mercado Pago. You cannot fund it with Wise, and you need a DNI to open it. See Mercado Pago for foreigners.
The rate you get with the Wise card
Wise charges the mid-market rate plus a transparent fee, usually under 1%. That is not the issue. The issue is that a foreign card in Argentina settles close to the official rate, around 1,530 ARS per USD in September 2026, while the crypto dollar, the rate the local economy uses for dollars, is around 1,580. That is roughly 3% more pesos per dollar before fees, and about 5% once you add a typical FX fee. The gap was 10% or more two years ago and has narrowed since the currency controls came off, so check today's rate before assuming anything.

The setup that works for expats and nomads
- Get paid into Wise in USD or EUR, as you already do.
- Move what you will spend in Argentina into a wallet that pays pesos. CacaoCash takes USD or USDC and pays any QR or alias at the crypto dollar rate, converting only the amount you spend. No DNI, no local bank. Start with paying QR codes without a DNI and sending pesos to an alias.
- Use the Wise card for terminals when it is simply more convenient, and for the rest of the world.

Frequently asked questions
Does Wise work in Argentina?
The Wise card works at terminals and ATMs. Wise has no ARS balance and no QR payments; peso transfers reach a bank account (CBU) only from the UK, Europe or Australia.
Can I send money to Argentina with Wise?
From the UK, Europe or Australia, yes: Wise pays pesos into an Argentine bank account at the official-equivalent rate (£8.68 fee on £400 from the UK in September 2026). From the US it is waitlisted, and it cannot pay an alias. To send pesos to any alias, CBU or CVU from anywhere at the crypto dollar rate, use a wallet like CacaoCash.
Can I pay rent in Buenos Aires with Wise?
Not directly. Landlords expect a peso transfer or, sometimes, USD cash. See how to pay rent in Buenos Aires as a foreigner.
Is the Wise card rate bad in Argentina?
Wise's fee is low, but the peso settlement happens at the card rate, close to the official rate. The crypto dollar pays about 3-5% more pesos per dollar in September 2026. The difference matters more for monthly living costs than for a short trip.
