Tax Free Argentina: How Tourists Get 13-14% Back (2026)

8 min read

TL;DR

Foreign tourists without permanent residence get 13% of the price back on Argentine-made goods bought at TAX FREE stores (ARS 70 to 570,000), or 14% from ARS 570,001 (ARCA table since 5 October 2026). Ask for the factura B and the electronic refund check (valid 6 months), then validate at Ezeiza, Aeroparque, river terminals, cruise ports or main border crossings: green channel is automatic, red channel means showing goods to Customs. The refund is paid in cash, to a foreign credit card or by international transfer. Imported goods, services, food and lodging are excluded. No official source requires a payment method; paying pesos by QR with CacaoCash gets ≈1,559 per USD after the 2.5% fee vs ≈1,465 on a foreign card (October 2026).

Yes, Argentina has tax free shopping for tourists. If you live abroad, you get 13% of the price back on Argentine-made goods bought at stores with the TAX FREE logo, or 14% on purchases from ARS 570,001. You validate the refund when you leave the country (Ezeiza, Aeroparque, ports or main border crossings) and get it in cash, on a foreign credit card or by international transfer (table in force since October 2026).

How much is the tax refund in Argentina?

Argentina's VAT is 21%, but you do not get 21% back. Since 5 October 2026 the refund table set by ARCA (the tax agency, Disposition 10/2026) pays a percentage of the total price you paid, VAT included. The difference between the 21% VAT and what you receive is the commission of the company that runs the refund.

Purchase amount (VAT included)Refund (% of the price)Example
ARS 70 to ARS 570,00013%ARS 300,000 purchase: ARS 39,000 back
ARS 570,001 and above14%ARS 800,000 purchase: ARS 112,000 back

Assumptions: ARCA Disposition 10/2026, published 5 October 2026. Percentages apply to the full price on the invoice. A purchase of exactly ARS 570,000 returns ARS 74,100 (13%); one of ARS 600,000 returns ARS 84,000 (14%). ARCA can update the table, so check the current percentage before you buy.

The legal basis is article 43 of the VAT Law and article 6 of Decree 1099/1998. The minimum is that each purchase is above ARS 70, which almost any item clears.

Who qualifies for the Argentina tax refund for tourists

Foreign tourists who do not have permanent residence in Argentina. You prove it with your passport, a foreign ID card or a document from Migraciones (the immigration office). Argentine residents, including foreigners with permanent residence, do not qualify.

The documents have to match. The most common reasons for a rejection are not proving that you live abroad, documents that do not match each other, and not showing the goods when Customs asks for them (Ámbito, October 2026).

What goods qualify for tax free in Argentina (and what does not)

Only goods that pay VAT and are made in Argentina. The store also has to take part in the scheme (TAX FREE logo).

  • Imported goods: excluded. A store that sells both local and imported items bills the imported ones on a separate invoice that does not get a refund.
  • Services: excluded. Only goods count.
  • Food and meals: excluded. Restaurant bills are not part of tax free.
  • Lodging: excluded from tax free. Hotels have their own rule, a 21% VAT discount applied at the hotel when you pay with a foreign card or international transfer. See the hotel VAT discount for foreigners.

Tax free shopping in Buenos Aires: step by step at the store

  1. Look for the TAX FREE logo on the door or at the till. Only stores in the scheme (with the logo) take part.
  2. Say you want tax free before paying and show your passport (or foreign ID).
  3. Get two documents: an invoice or ticket-invoice class B ("factura B") and the refund check ("cheque de reintegro"), which is now electronic.
  4. Check that your name and document number are right on both. A mismatch is a common reason for rejection.
  5. Keep the goods with you. Customs may ask to see them when you leave.

The refund check is valid for 6 months (argentina.travel, June 2026), so you can buy early in your trip and validate on the way out.

How to get a tax refund at Ezeiza airport (and other exit points)

You validate the refund when you leave Argentina, before you check your bags if the goods are in them. Validation works at Ezeiza and Aeroparque airports, river terminals (Buquebus and Colonia Express), cruise ports and the main border crossings.

  1. Find a self-service terminal or use the app at the exit point to validate your refund checks.
  2. Green channel: the refund is approved automatically and you go on.
  3. Red channel: you go to Customs (Aduana) and show the goods, the invoice, the refund check, your passport and your boarding pass.
  4. No terminal or no connection: Customs checks it manually.

The digital validation rollout since May 2026

In May 2026 ARCA launched a digital scheme: electronic validation, traceability of each check and real-time Customs approval (Cronista, May 2026). It is being rolled out gradually by exit point. Where it is not live yet, the manual process still applies, so you may need extra time where validation is still manual.

How the VAT refund in Argentina is paid

Once validated, you choose one of three ways:

PayoutWhat to know
CashAt the refund desk at the exit point.
Foreign credit cardCredited to a credit card issued outside Argentina.
International transferSent to a bank account abroad.

Sources: ARCA and argentina.travel (June 2026). The refund is not paid into a local app or an Argentine account.

Does the payment method matter for tax free?

No official source (ARCA, argentina.travel, Ámbito October 2026) requires a specific payment method for the purchase. What makes it eligible is the store, the goods, your residence and the two documents (factura B and refund check). Because each store runs its own process, ask before you pay whether it issues the refund check with the method you plan to use.

Where the method does matter is the exchange rate you get on the purchase itself. A foreign card converts at about 1,465 pesos per dollar. Paying the store's QR in pesos from a dollar balance with CacaoCash converts at about 1,559 after its 2.5% fee, shown before you confirm (October 2026, see fees). On an ARS 300,000 purchase that is about US$205 on a foreign card versus about US$192 with CacaoCash, before the 13% refund. The full comparison is in card dollar vs crypto dollar, and rates move daily on the Argentina dollar rate page.

To be clear: CacaoCash does not process tax free. The refund itself comes in cash, to a foreign credit card or by international transfer, never to CacaoCash.

Common tax free mistakes in Argentina

  • Buying in a store without the TAX FREE logo. No logo, no refund check.
  • Leaving without the factura B and the refund check. A plain receipt is not enough.
  • Expecting the full 21%. You get 13% or 14% of the price.
  • Checking the bag before validating. If Customs sends you to the red channel, you need the goods in hand.
  • Forgetting the passport or boarding pass at the validation point.
  • Assuming imported items count. Only Argentine-made goods qualify.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay with CacaoCash and still get tax free?

No official source excludes paying in pesos by QR, but each store runs its own process, so confirm at the till that it will issue the factura B and refund check. The refund is paid in cash, to a foreign credit card or by transfer, not to CacaoCash.

How much tax do tourists get back in Argentina?

13% of the price on purchases from ARS 70 to ARS 570,000, and 14% from ARS 570,001 (ARCA table in force since 5 October 2026). It is a percentage of the total price, not the full 21% VAT.

Where do I get my tax refund when leaving Argentina?

At the exit point: Ezeiza or Aeroparque airports, river terminals (Buquebus, Colonia Express), cruise ports and main border crossings, using self-service terminals or the app. If you get the red channel, Customs checks your goods and documents.

Do I get tax back on hotels and restaurants?

Not through tax free. Food and services are excluded. Lodging has its own 21% VAT discount applied at the hotel, see hotel VAT discount for foreigners.

How long is the tax free check valid?

Six months (argentina.travel, June 2026). Validate it when you leave Argentina within that time.

Can I get the refund in cash?

Yes. You can take it in cash at the refund desk, or have it credited to a foreign credit card or sent by international transfer.
