eSIM for Argentina (2026): Best Plans, Prices and How to Set It Up

7 min read

TL;DR

A data-only eSIM is the easiest way to get internet in Argentina: install it on Wi-Fi before you fly and it connects to Movistar or Claro when you land, with no Argentine ID or store visit. In CacaoCash plans start at 1 GB for 7 days for about US$5.13 including the US$0.25 fee, paid from your USD balance. For heavy use, unlimited plans like Holafly or a local Claro chip registered with your passport can be cheaper per gigabyte. You get no Argentine number, but WhatsApp keeps working on your own.

Yes: a data-only eSIM is the easiest way to get internet in Argentina in 2026. You install it on your phone before you fly, and it connects to a local network (Movistar or Claro) when you land, with no store, no paperwork and no Argentine ID. You can buy one inside CacaoCash and pay from your USD balance, or use a travel eSIM brand or a local SIM. Whatever you pick, you will want mobile data from minute one: maps, ride apps, WhatsApp and paying QR codes all need a connection.

Do you need an eSIM in Argentina?

You need some kind of mobile data. There are four realistic ways to get it:

  • Roaming with your home carrier. Zero setup, but expensive for anything longer than a few days. AT&T's International Day Pass is $12 per day and Verizon TravelPass is about $12 per day, so a two-week trip costs about $168.
  • A travel eSIM. Data only, bought online in minutes, priced in dollars. Best for most tourists and short stays.
  • A local physical SIM (chip). Cheap data and an Argentine number, but you need to register it with your passport and usually visit a store or kiosk.
  • A local carrier eSIM. Same as the chip without the plastic. Availability for foreigners varies by carrier.

Your phone must be eSIM-compatible and unlocked (not tied to your home carrier). Most iPhones from the XS onward and recent Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models support eSIM.

All plans cover Argentina only and are data only: no calls, no SMS and no Argentine phone number. They run on Movistar and Claro on 4G, and you can share the connection as a hotspot with your laptop. You pay from your USD balance, with no DNI, local bank account or Argentine number needed.

How to buy and install the CacaoCash eSIM

Do this at home, on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly.

  1. Open the CacaoCash app and tap eSIM on the home screen.
  2. On Choose a data plan, pick the amount of data and the validity you want.
  3. Check the total on Review before buying and tap Buy eSIM.
  4. On Your eSIM is ready, install it one of these ways:
    • iPhone: tap Install on this iPhone and follow the prompts.
    • QR code: open the screen on another device (or a laptop) and scan the QR with the phone you are taking.
    • Manual: enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code shown in the app.
    • Android: go to Settings > Network (or Connections) > SIMs > Add eSIM, then scan the QR or enter the code.

You can reopen your eSIM details anytime under My eSIMs. An eSIM can be installed only once, so do not delete it from your phone after installing.

When you land

  • Turn the eSIM line on and set it as your mobile data line.
  • Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. It is normal: the eSIM is a foreign profile using a local network.
  • Keep your home SIM on if you want to receive calls and texts (bank codes, for example), but turn data roaming off on that line to avoid roaming charges. Or turn it off completely.
  • The APN (data.esim) is usually set automatically. If data does not start, check it in the eSIM line settings.

The plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Argentina, not on the day you install it. Unused data expires at the end of the validity period.

Data only: what that means

A data-only eSIM gives you internet, not a phone line. You will not get an Argentine number, and you cannot make normal calls or send SMS on it. In practice that matters less than it sounds:

  • WhatsApp keeps working on your existing number. Argentines run their lives on WhatsApp, and your account stays the same.
  • Calls: use WhatsApp calls or any internet calling app.
  • Emergencies: calling 911 needs a voice line. Keep your home SIM active for that, or ask someone nearby. Our guide to emergency numbers in Argentina lists the WhatsApp line for the Tourist Police.

Local SIM or local eSIM with a passport

Every Argentine line must be registered to an ID, and non-resident foreigners register with their passport (ENACOM Resolution 263/2023). Your options, as of October 2026:

  • Personal sells eSIMs online and, according to argentina.travel, lets you choose "passport" in the ID field. It also has a stand at Ezeiza airport near check-in counter 40 (card payments only).
  • Claro and Movistar eSIMs generally need a store visit with your passport. Claro's Chip Turista is about 25 GB for 30 days for about US$15.

A local number is worth the effort for long stays, or if you need Argentine apps that verify you by SMS. To add credit to a local line later, see how to top up a prepaid phone in Argentina.

How much data do you need?

A rough guide, since usage varies a lot from person to person:

  • About 1 GB per week: maps, WhatsApp messages, QR payments and ride apps, with Wi-Fi at your hotel or apartment.
  • About 3 to 5 GB for two weeks: the same plus photos, social media and some video calls.
  • About 10 to 20 GB for a month: remote work with your laptop on a hotspot now and then.

If you stream video or work all day on a hotspot, a bigger plan or an unlimited one will be more comfortable.

Why data matters for your money in Argentina

Argentina pays by phone. Cafés, kiosks and taxis show a QR code, and friends, landlords and tour guides ask for your alias to receive a transfer. Both need a connection at the moment you pay. With CacaoCash you can pay any QR code without a DNI and send pesos to an alias, CVU or CBU from your USD balance (here is how alias, CVU and CBU work). Paying this way gets you the crypto dollar rate instead of the card dollar; our guide on the card dollar vs the crypto dollar explains the gap, and you can check today's numbers on the Argentina dollar rate page.

Getting online is one item on a longer list. Our Buenos Aires arrival and money checklist covers the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my phone support eSIM?

Most iPhones from the XS onward and recent Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones do. Look for "Add eSIM" in your SIM or mobile settings. The phone must also be unlocked; if it is tied to your home carrier, ask them to unlock it before you travel.

Can I keep WhatsApp with a data-only eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp is linked to your account and number, not to the SIM that provides data. It keeps working on your existing number, including calls.

Does the eSIM work in Patagonia?

In towns, generally yes. Coverage on routes, in national parks and in remote areas is patchy for every carrier. Claro is often cited as having the widest coverage in Patagonia and rural areas, and the CacaoCash eSIM can use both Movistar and Claro. Download offline maps before long drives.

Can I use my eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes, the CacaoCash plans allow hotspot, so you can share data with a laptop or tablet. Hotspot use counts against your plan's data.

Can I buy an eSIM after I arrive?

Yes. Connect to Wi-Fi at the airport, your hotel or a café, buy and install the eSIM, and switch to it. Installing before you fly is simply less stressful.

Is there 5G in Argentina?

Only in parts of the big cities. The CacaoCash eSIM plans are 4G, which is fast enough for maps, payments, video calls and hotspot use.
